PURPOSE:To use the information on the document constitution to the retrieving purpose by providing a means to extract the document constitution information, a means to display said constitution information and a means to perform retrieval based on the constitution information. CONSTITUTION:In a retrieval mode a document is selected out of a document control table 6 with input given from a key word 7 and by means of the document name and the key word. The 1st page of the selected document is usually displayed at a document display part 9. Then the document is successively displayed every page with instructions for display of preceding and next pages. While an index synthesizing part 8 synthesizes the titles, headers and page numbers stored in an index file 5 to produce an index and with use of the information on the table 6. This index is displayed for designation for headers and page numbers. Thus a desired page is displayed. In addition, it is possible to display the only pages that contain the titles since the document is displayed very page. As a result, the desired chapters or paragraphs can be quickly searched and therefore the outline or the contents of the document be quickly known.
