PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition which can give a transparent cured article having excellent optical properties and low water absorptivity, by mixing a hydrogenated phenol novolak epoxy resin with a curing agent. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogenated phenol novolak epoxy resin (A) is obtained by reacting a hydrogenated novolak phenolic resin obtained by hydrogenating the aromatic rings of a novolak phenolic resin having at least one member selected from the group consisting of phenol, an alkyl-substituted phenol and bisphenol A as a phenolic component at a high pressure in the presence of a metal catalyst such as Ni, Pd or Pt with epichlorohydrin. Component A is mixed with 0.5-1.5 equivalent, per epoxy equivalent, of an acid anhydride (B) of the formula (wherein the cyclohexane ring has at lest one group selected from among a saturated alkyl group, a haloalkyl group and a substituent which forms a bicyclic ring together with the cyclohexane ring in position 2-5, and the total member of the carbon atoms of said at least one group is 2 or greater) e.g., [3,4-dimethyl-6-(2-methylpropyl)hexahydrophthalic anhydride].
