PURPOSE:To obtain a denatured starch which can give a binder, a sizing agent or a coating agent excellent in water resistance and oil resistance, by reacting a starch with denatured dimethylpolysiloxane in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A starch (A) (e.g., potato starch) is reacted with denatured dimethylpolysiloxane (B), average MW of 1,000-100,000, of formula I [wherein X is (substituted) amino, -Cl, a group formula II or III, m is an integer and n is 1-20) dispersed in 0.01-10%, based on component A, water at 45 deg.C or below by using 0.005-10%, based on component A, alkali aluminate (e.g., sodium aluminate) or 0.005-4%, based on component A, alkali hydroxide (C) (e.g., NaOH) as a catalyst, and the obtained product is washed with water, dehydrated and dried.
