PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of editing processing and to execute rapidly the processing by separating the retrieving processing and the editing processing of character data, and holding always the character data of a row requested for a present character input. CONSTITUTION:An editing program stored in an editing program storing mechanism 12 executes the request to the retrieving program stored in a character data retrieving program storing mechanism 14. When the data for one retrieved row are received, it is preserved in a character data storing mechanism 13. The editing program edit while observing the data preserved in the mechanism 13 in accordance with inputting of the character. When the input of the character is shifted to the next row, the editing program executes the retrieving request of the character data of the row to the retrieving program, receives the data for one extracted row and preserves them at the mechanism 13 newly. When the character data of a certain row are referred to at the editing program, and only by proposing the retrieving request to the retrieving program, the character data storing mechanism will not be seen.
