PURPOSE:To manufacture an Ni-coated stainless steel strip excellent in workability and surface luster, by continuously applying matte Ni electroplating to a stainless steel strip and then by subjecting the above strip to nonoxidizing annealing, rolling, reannealing, and temper rolling. CONSTITUTION:A bright anneal-finished ferritic or austenitic stainless steel strip is subjected to pretreatment such as degreasing, pickling, etc., and then is subjected to nonoxidizing annealing in an atmosphere of ammonia cracking gas or of a nonoxidizing gaseous mixture of H2 and N2 in the ratio 3:1 by volume at a temp. higher than or equal to 400 deg.C which is annealing temp. of stainless steel stocks. Subsequently, the above strip is rolled at 20-50% draft so as to improve surface luster, which is subjected to nonoxidizing annealing again and then to temper rolling at 0.2-3.0% draft so as to improve surface luster to a greater extent. In this way, the Ni-coated stainless steel excellent in surface luster and workability can be manufactured.
