PURPOSE:To enable the use of a multitime ribbon, by constituting the titled printer so that a carriage moves so as to exceed a printing moving range when the end of the ribbon is detected by a ribbon end detector and the feed direction of the ribbon is changed over by said movement. CONSTITUTION:When the right-hand end of a ribbon is detected after the repetition of printing and return operations, a carriage 2 returns to the position of Fig.A in such a state that a printing head 1 is released and further moves to the left by a distance (g) so as to exceed a printing moving range G1 as shown by a Fig.B to reach the left end of a carriage moving range G2 and, by this operation, a change-over mechanism 20 is operated by a direction change-over rod 28L to allow a float gear 3 to mesh with the ribbon driving gear 12R of the right side and the feed direction of an ink ribbon is changed over. Further, printing and return operations are repeated and, thereafter, the feed direction of the ink ribbon 3 is also changed over in the same way when the left-hand end of the ribbon is detected.
