PURPOSE:To attain good separation irrespective of the state of a transfer member especially the state of image at its tip part by changing the apply voltage of a separation charger according to the image density of separated transfer member. CONSTITUTION:A latent image is developed by a developing device 5 and transferred at the position of a transfer charger 7 conforming timing with a transfer member (not shown in the figure) carried by a carrying path 6, and then separated from a photosensitive body by a separation charger 8 and further goes to a fixing position not shown in the figure. Voltage for separation made by superposing DC on AC by a high voltage power source 9 is applied to the separation changer 8. An original M is irradiated by a light source 11 for image forming, and at the same time, a part of the luminous flux of irradiating light is taken out, and detected by a sensor 14 through a reflecting mirror 12 and a collimator lens 13, and corona discharge of the separation charger 8 is changed according to the image density at the tip of the transfer member by a control circuit 15 that controls DC voltage applied to the separation charger 8.
