PURPOSE:To obtain an enlarged picture having the high contrast and reduced deterioration in picture quality by duplicating the same bits by the prescribed timing in the write or read mode of a memory storing picture signals when the picture is enlarged. CONSTITUTION:The picture signal (a) is sent to a line memory 31 from a reader 1 via a selector 2 based on a fixed clock (c). The write timing to the memory 31 is set so that the sampling is dulpicated twice at a point near the pulse of a standard clock (c). Therefore the memory 31 is filled at t time point when the half (1024 bits) of the signal (a) given form the reader 1 is supplied. Then the memory 31 is read when a counter 71 counts up 2048 bits. Then the step frequency is halved by the signal received from an enlargement/reduction control ler 6 and the secondary scan direction is doubled. In this case, the same line is written twice in order to avoid the increase of the linear density.
