PURPOSE:To decrease an ignition lag period with no worsening of combustibility, by providing a center electrode, which is insulated from a cylinder head, to be arranged in a swirl chamber while an ignition control unit which starts an electric discharge in a clearance between the center electrode and a cylinder head wall. CONSTITUTION:A main combustion chamber 3 is formed between a cylinder head 1 and a piston 2. A swirl chamber 5, which communicates with the main combustion chamber 3, is formed in the inside of the cylinder head 1. The swirl chamber 5 provides a center electrode 11, insulated from the cylinder head 1, to be arranged. An ignition control unit, which applies a difference of electric potential, before injection of fuel is started, and starts an electric discharge, after the fuel is injected, in a clearance between the center electrode 11 and a cylinder head wall, is provided between the center electrode 11 and the cylinder head wall forming the swirl chamber 5. In this way, an engine noise can be reduced by enabling an ignition lag period to be remarkably decreased by the forced ignition.
