PURPOSE:To suppress the occurrence of a pseudo contour outline by increasing the number of a quantizing bit a little at the time of A/D conversion, thereafter, executing the non-linear compression at the time of the compression of the bit, making smaller the output change at a low input value easy to generate the pseudo contour and enlarging the output change to a high input value. CONSTITUTION:A composite video signal inputted from an input terminal 10 is separated to the chrominance signals of R, G and B by a color decoder 11 and the chrominance signals of the R, G and B are converted to the digital signal of 6 bits at an A/D converter 13. The chrominance signals of 6 bits are non-linearly compressed to the signal of 4 bits by a non-linear compressor 15. The non-linear compression suppresses the change of the output at a small input value (part with a low luminance), and as a large input value is obtained, the change of the output comes to be larger. The non-linearly compressed chrominance signals are sent to a segment driver 17. On the other hand, a synchronizing signal included in the composite video signal is separated by a synchronizing separating circuit 12 and sent to a timing signal generating part 14. A segment driver 16 and a common driver 17 are synchronized to the timing signal from a timing signal generating part 14 and the electrode of a color liquid crystal display panel 18 is displayed and driven.
