PURPOSE:To readily obtain latex having forming performance of coating film having improved water resistance, transparency, gloss and solvent resistance, by subjecting an ethylenic unsaturated monomer and a reactive functional group- containing monomer to emulsion polymerization in the presence of a betaine type emulsifying agent. CONSTITUTION:An ethylenic unsaturated monomer (e.g. acrylic acid ester, etc.) and a reactive functional group-containing unsaturated monomer (e.g. glycidyl acrylate, allylamine, etc.) are usually used in a weight ratio of 99/1-85/15 and subjected to emulsion polymerization in the presence of (preferably 0.5-8wt%) a betaine type emulsifying agent [e.g. compounds shown by formulas I-V (CmH2m+2-p-q is polyhydric alcohol residue; R1 is 8-30C alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is 2-4C alkylene; R3 is 1-5C alkylene; R4-R6 are 1-3C alkyl, etc.; R7 and R8 are 6-20C alkyl or H; R9 is 1-20C alkyl or H; R10 and R11 are 6-30C alkyl, etc.; a=0-20; b=0-30; c=1-30; m=8-20; p=2-5; q=0-3; X is anion; Y is group shown by formula VI)].
