PURPOSE:To produce a polyester resin having a high glass transition point and improved heat resistance, by polycondensing a specified dicarboxylic acid or its dihalide or diester with an aromatic diol (ester). CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid of formula I (wherein R is H, a halogen, a lower alkyl or a lower alkoxyl) or its dihalide or diester dissolved in a water- immiscible organic solvent such as methylene chloride or chloroform is polycondensed with an aromatic diol of formula II (wherein Ar is a bivalent group containing an aromatic ring) or its ester dissolved in an aqueous alkali solution of a concentration of 0.5-3N at 0-50 deg.C in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g., tetrabutylammonium chloride) to obtain a polyester resin having repeating units of formula III (wherein Ar is a bivalent residue derived by removing th hydroxyl groups from an aromatic diol) and a logarithmic viscosity of 0.1-5dl/g (as measured in a 0.5g/100ml N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution at 30 deg.C).
