PURPOSE:To attempt an increase in engine output in an internal combustion engine haring five strokes of suction, compression, explosion, exhaust, and scavenging by making a scavenging pump generating pressure air to be used for a scavenging stroke a displacement type whereby setting its displacement per revolution by a specified equation. CONSTITUTION:A five cycle engine A includes a suction pipe 3, an exhaust pipe 5 and a scavenging pipe 7 which are opened/closed by a suction valve 4, an exhaust valve 6, and a scavenging valve 8 respectively, and furthermore a scavenging pump 9 which generates pressure air in order discharge residual combustion gas in a scavenging process when the exhaust valve 6 is opened. In this case, the scavenging pump 9 is made to be of a displacement type and is rotated by a crank shaft 12 by way of a belt mechanism 18. And let a whole gap volume of an engine be Vc*, let the revolving speed per unit time of the engine and scavenging pump 9 be N and (n) respectively, and let a scavenging factor be (k), the displacement Vp of the scavenging pump 9 per revolution is set by an equation: Vp=1/2.k.N/n.Vc*. In this case, the scavenging factor (k) is determined to be within a range between O.8 and 2.5.
