PURPOSE:To improve a recognition rate and to reduce recognition time by dividing a pattern into partial patterns so as to recognize the pattern and transferring the comparison to other pattern even one the way of comparison if the degree of difference reaches a prescribed value or over. CONSTITUTION:A dictionary section 5 is provided with a character dictionary section and a partial pattern dictionary section, and at least the number of strokes of each partial pattern, coordinates of end points of each stroke and information representing the shape of stroke and information to segment the partial pattern from one-character information are registered in the partial pattern dictionary section, the partial pattern dictionary section is used to the inputted character pattern to apply partial pattern discrimination. The character pattern to be compared by the result is selected to compare the feature of the inputted character pattern and that of the selected pattern. If a value representing the result of comparison exceeds a prescribed allowable value, the comparison with the pattern in processing is finished.
