PURPOSE:To identify all device address and action states of an input/output device without erasing the contents of a main memory, by using a partial area of the storage device of a service processor device as a saving area of the main storage device. CONSTITUTION:A service processor device 20 first stops the operation of an arithmetic processor 10 and saves data on a specific area to a RAM 23 of the device 20 from the main storage device 11 via a signal line 220. Then a series of programs stored in the RAM 23 are stored in a specific area of the main storage device 11. The processor 10 is started for execution of programs and stopped after identifying the working state of an input/output device. The device 20 reads the device address and the working state of the input/output device out of the processor 10. When this reading action is through, the device 20 sends the data saved in the RAM 23 back to the main storage device 11 and displays the information on the working state of the input/output device on a system console 21 for each device address.
