In order to transport a load such as a barge carrying the elements of a launcher, between two fixed points, this load is placed on a vehicle 10 with an air cushion guided by a cable 12 connecting these fixed points, and fitted with propulsion means 38 acting on this cable. The load B is received in a central passage 14 of the vehicle 10, this passage being partly submerged in an expanse of water when the support means 24 are stopped, to allow loading and unloading. <IMAGE>
