The method involves adjusting a transmission ratio of a differential drive (14) by a control unit, and providing an operating mode, in which a synchronous generator (17) is connected to an electrical mains and a generator shaft (16) is decoupled from a rotor shaft (12) over the differential drive. The synchronous generator is independently excited by an exciter unit (24). The generator is operated as a phase shifter for the electrical mains.
