The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for collecting and assembling identical cylindrical bodies, especially empty cans (14), to form a multi-row layer of high packing density, by the use of a conveying and collecting band (2), the upper strand of which forms a collecting space, closed on the end face by a removable can barrier and limited laterally by lateral guides (13), for the cylindrical bodies which are delivered in an upright position. According to the invention, the lateral guides (13) are moved periodically in the transverse direction during the collecting operation, with the result that the width of the collecting space is periodically widened somewhat beyond the width dimension of the desired can pattern, so that the dynamic pressure can decrease and space is provided for the cylindrical bodies (14) crowding from behind to run in and infiltrate. <IMAGE>
