PURPOSE:To enable an engine to perform its cooling down with no trouble given to an operator, by stopping the engine after its low speed operation is automatically performed for a predetermined time in accordance with the action of turning off a key switch. CONSTITUTION:A key switch 7 is controlled being turned off, and if a stopping instruction of an engine 1 is generated, a key switchoff signal is output to the second target engine speed setting means 9 from a detecting means 8. In this way, a signal of target engine speed, sufficiently low for performing low speed operation, is output to a minimum value selecting means 10 from the second target engine speed setting means 9 and compared with a signal of target engine speed output from the first target engine speed setting means 6, and the minimum value selecting means 10 selects a signal of the lower target engine speed to be output to a governor control means 4. In this way, the engine 1, being driven in low speed operation by driving a governor 3, performs the cooling down. And after the predetermined time, a signal is output to a fuel cutoff means 5 from a timer means 11, and the engine 1 stops driving.
