Flue gas is filtered by upward flow through a generally flat pleated metal filter mesh 7, with apertures 20-500 microns in width, and fitter cake is removed therefrom by compressed air directed downwards through the mesh from an elongated nozzle 20 which is reciprocated across the mesh (arrow 19). A filter cake suction nozzle 22 may move similarly on the upstream side of the mesh. The width of the slot 21 in nozzle 20 is adjustable between 0.1 and 2 mms.
