PURPOSE:To permit easy overwriting by modulating the intensity and projection light of a heating beam according to an information signal while impressing an effective magnetic field to a thermomagnetic recording medium and subjecting the heating temp. of the medium to selective control between 1st and 2nd heating states. CONSTITUTION:The information signal is magnetically recorded on the thermomagnetic recording medium by heating the thermomagnetic recording medium while impressing the effective magnetic field Heff in the prescribed direction perpendicular to the film plane to a perpendicularly magnetized film 3 of the recording medium. The 1st heating state to heat the medium at the temp. at which Hs>Heff>Hn (Hn>0) or Heff<-Hn (Hn<0) (where Hs is a saturation magnetic field and Hn is a n inverted nucleus generation magnetic field) is attained and the heated part has a multiple magnetic domain state and the 2nd heating state to heat the medium at the temp. at which Heff>Hs is attained and the heating part has a single magnetic domain state are modulated according to the information signal to be recorded. The overwrite is thus permitted by the simple method of modulating the heating temp. of the medium.
