PURPOSE:To easily produce iron powder adequate as a raw material for powder metallurgy by subjecting high-purity fine iron ore powder to fluidized reduction, then adjusting and pulverizing said powder to powder having a specific grain size distribution and further reducing and sintering the powder in a gaseous hydrogen atmosphere, then repulverizing the powder. CONSTITUTION:The iron ore powder of high purity contg. <=1.5wt% oxide gangue component except Fe2O3 and having 2mm-10 mesh is subjected to the fluidized reduction at 700-1,000 deg.C. The reduced from powder is so subjected to the grain size adjustment by pulverization as to have <=100 mesh grain size distribution contg. >=10wt% particles sized <=325 mesh. Such reduced iron powder is heated to 950-1,050 deg.C in the gaseous hydrogen atmosphere, by which the finish reduction is executed and the sintered body of the gentle bonds is obtd. The sintered body is disintegrated and the iron powder suitable for the raw material or powder metallurgy is thus inexpensively produced with a small- scale device.
