PURPOSE:To enable excellent ignition of alcohol fuel both during low and high load running, by a method wherein a catalyst layer by which to change a catalyst for oxidizing alcohol into an active material is formed on the wall surface of a combustion chamber formed in the top surface of a piston head. CONSTITUTION:A combustion chamber 4 is formed in the top surface of a piston head 2 of a piston 1. The combustion chamber 4 is filled with air compressed resulting from raising of the piston 1, and the air is ignited by means of spark from a plug 6 togetherwith alcohol fuel injected through a nozzle 5. In this constitution, a catalyst layer 7, containing an alcohol catalyst, promoting oxidation of methanol being a main component of alcohol fuel, in a state that the alcohol catalyst is changed into an active material, is formed on the wall surface of the combustion chamber 4. This constitution enables oxidation (ignition) of even low temperature low concentration alcohol fuel, and improves combustion efficiency both during low and high load running.
