PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an additive for the binder of molding sand, without producing by-product, by reacting styrene with phosphorus pentachloride in an inert solvent and adding and reacting phthalic anhydride to the resultant reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:Styrene is made to react with phosphorus pentachloride in an inert solvent (preferably benzene or toluene) preferably at 50-80 deg.C. The objective compound is produced by adding phthalic anhydride to the reaction mixture and reacting preferably at 50-80 deg.C for 1-20hr. The molar ratio of phosphorus pentachloride and phthalic anhydride to styrene is preferably 1-3 to 1.
