PURPOSE:To improve the repetitive life of an EC display element by providing a color forming layer consisting of a polymer and electrochromic material on a transparent electrode. CONSTITUTION:The color forming layer 4A consisting of the polymer and electrochromic material is formed on the transparent electrode. Since the layer 4A is formed of the polymer and electrochromic material, the polymer functions as the binder of the electrochromic material to assure the bonding between the electrochromic material with each other and the bonding between the electrochromic material and the transparent electrode 3. The polymer diffuses the K<+> ions necessary for an electrochemical oxidation reduction reaction. Since the electrochromic material is securely adhered to the transparent electrode 3 by the binder consisting of the polymer, said material does not easily exfoliate even if the display element is operated by bringing the layer 4A and an electrolyte 6 into contact with each other. The repetitive life of the EC display element is thereby improved.
