PURPOSE:To eliminate the needs for power in operating a clamshell device for dredging deep seabed by a method in which clamshell is pivotally attached to the lower end of a strut having a drain trap cavity, a water-pressure cylinder is pivotally supported between the strut and the clamshell, and a control valve to be operated upon contact of the clamshell with the seabed is provided. CONSTITUTION:An operating beam 16 is provided above a bracket 10 to pivotally attach a water-pressure cylinder 11 to a strut 5 in the face of the operating lever 22 of a control valve 21 attached to the strut 5. The upper end of a drain trap 5a is led to the lower part of the cylinder 11 by a pipeline 25 and closed by the control valve 21. The upper part of the cylinder 11 is provided with a stop valve 31 and a check valve 32 connected to a pipeline 30 opened in sea water. The graber 7 is opened, the stop valves 24, 28, and 31 are closed, and the clamshell 7 is lowered into sea. When the clamshell 7 lands on the seabed 2, the valve 21 is opened, the piston 18 is moved downwards by receiving the pressure of sea water, and a sample is taken out of the seabed 2. The whole structure of the device can thus be simplified.
