PURPOSE:To lessen the deterioration of magnetic characteristics by external strain by using a magnetic alloy film consisting of a prescribed compsn. to form a high magnetic permeability layer of a perpendicular magnetic recording medium formed by providing the perpendicular magnetic layer on the high magnetic permeability layer provided on a nonmagnetic base. CONSTITUTION:An Ni-Fe-Ta metal layer 2 which is the high magnetic permeability layer and a thin Co-Cr alloy film 3 which is the perpendicular magnetic layer are provided on a polyimide film 1 which is the nonmagnetic base. The high magnetic permeability layer 2 is so formed as to have the compsn. consisting of 45-85wt% Ni, 3-20wt% Ta and the balance Fe. The medium which has high mechanical strength and decreases the deterioration of the magnetic characteristics by the external strain is thereby obtd.
