PURPOSE:To inhibit the formation of scale on the surface of a steel material during heating to a high temp. in a heating furnace without reducing the heating efficiency of the steel material, by previously coating the surface of the steel material with a carbonaceous substance. CONSTITUTION:When a steel material is heated to a high temp. in a heating furnace in the air, the surface of the steel material is coated with a slurry prepd. by mixing a carbonaceous substance such as pulverized coke, coal or graphite with 20-50wt% water. The coated steel material is put in the heating furnace and heated. The concn. of oxygen in the atmosphere in the heating furnace is lowered and part of the carbonaceous substance remains, so the formation of scale on the surface of the steel material is inhibited. Since heat is generated by the combustion of part of the carbon layer, the heating efficiency of the steel material is not reduced.
