PURPOSE:To enable the monitoring of defects in yarn surely without changes in a reference value solely depending information of once yarn, by a method wherein an average dielectric constant of yarn is determined by comparison with a reference value after the feeding of yards into a measuring condenser, and then an amplification factor is adjusted to match the value. CONSTITUTION:When material and count of a yarn is set on a controller, a reference voltage Vm is fed to yarn defect monitors 1 corresponding thereto. When yarns are fed to a measuring condenser 21, a measuring circuit 2 measures the dielectric constant of yarns and an output thereof is amplified with an amplification circuit 3 in about 1sec. after the yarns start running, and when a yarn matches with the material and count set, a voltage equal to the voltage Vm is outputted. When any abnormality is in a yarn, a signal U differing from the voltage Vm is outputted and when the signal exceeds an allowable value, a command signal for cutting or the like is outputted. When new yarns fed into the condenser 2 makes any fluctuation in the count, the signal U is compared with the voltage Vm by a comparator circuit 4 and a control circuit 5 corrects the sensitivity of the circuit 3 so that the resulting difference shrinks to zero.
