PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as an asymmetric ligand for asymmetric modified metal hydroxide simply, readily and in high purity, by optically resolving (+ or -)-1-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-amino-1-propanol by the use of a specific optical resolution agent. CONSTITUTION:(+ or -)-1-(2,5-Dimethoxyphenyl)-2-amino-1-propanol is optically resolved by the use of optically active N-acetylleucine as an optical resolution agent in a solvent (preferably aqueous solvent containing organic solvent such as lower alcohol, e.g. methanol, etc., or aliphatic lower ketone, e.g. acetone, etc.) at room temperature - under heating while stirring or standing to give the aimed compound. When L-form of the optical active N-acetylleucine is used as the optical resolution agent, (-)-form of the aimed compound and N-acetyl-L-leucine salt are obtained as slightly soluble diastereomer and (+)-form and N-acetyl-L-leucine salt are obtained as readily soluble diastereomer.
