PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber having flat hollow cross-section and high glossiness, feeling and bulkiness, etc., and useful for carpet, etc., by melt-spinning a polymer through a pair of oppositely placed semicircular dies each having a linear slit protruded inward and blasting cooling gas stream perpendicular to the spun fiber. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic synthetic polymer fiber (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate fiber) having a particular hollow and flat cross-section is produced by the following process. A polymer is melt-spun through a die having a cross- section composed of a pair of semicircular slits positioned so that the end parts of the slits are facing each other. Each semicircular slit is provided with linear slits n, m protruded from both ends and inward from the curved part. The spun yarn is cooled with cooling gas stream blasted at a flow rate of >=1m/sec perpendicular to the spun yarn. The objective fiber produced by this process has a cross-section containing two or more hollow parts and having nearly the shape of a convex lens wherein the terminal sharp angle of outer circumference is replaced with a nearly B-shaped part.
