PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of the use of light beam by combining a beam splitter to decompose a white light into three components and also into a vertical component and a parallel component, with a TN liquid crystal to align the polarizing directions of light beams incident to respective projectors. CONSTITUTION:The decomposing of white light generated by a light source 11 into respective red, green, and blue components and the alignment of the polarizing directions of the light beams incident to respective liquid crystal displays 16-18, are executed by light polarizing elements 13-15 constituted by combining the beam splitters 13a, 13b-15a, 15b and the TN liquid crystals 13c-15c that rotate by ninety degrees. White light generated by the source 11 is separated into a red/green/blue components and into a parallel component and a vertical component by the wavelength characteristics of the beams splitters 13a, 13b-15a, 15b, then the vertical (parallel) component is converted to a parallel (vertical) component and aligned by the ninety- degree-rotating TN liquid crystals 13c-15c, and are made incident to the liquid crystal displays 16-18. As a result, a color decomposing dichroic prism (or mirror) is made unnecessary, and the efficiency of the use of the light beam of the liquid crystal display can be upgraded to fifty percent or higher.
