PURPOSE:To execute erasing prior to the operation of recording/reproducing heads when the traveling direction of a magnetic tape is a forward direction or the reverse direction by using a composite rotary erasing head. CONSTITUTION:The composite rotary erasing head 23 is formed by integrating two rotary erasing heads one of which has Tp/2 (Tp is a track pitch) step difference and the other of which has -Tp/2 step difference from the recording/ reproducing rotary heads 21a, 21b in the rotary shaft direction of the cylinder 25. A signal from a erasing carrier generator 8 to be an erasing current supplying means is switched by a forward/reverse erasing head changing switch 11 so that erasing current flows into one rotary erasing head at the time of forward tape traveling and the erasing current flows into the other rotary erasing head at the time of reverse tape traveling. Thus, rotational erasing can be executed in both the forward and reverse tape traveling directions prior to the operation of the recording and reproducing rotary heads.
