PURPOSE:To make it possible to complete an unmanned process by continuing machining along a machining locus in the reverse direction after recovery of an electrode when a control device discriminates that the electrode may not pass through a machined groove due to deformation of a workpiece upon breakage of the electrode during machining. CONSTITUTION:When a wire electrode 1 is broken during machining, an X-Y table is moved by an X-axis drive device 2 and a Y-axis drive device 3 so as to move a workpiece 12 while the electrode 1 is moved from a wire breakage position 4 to a machining initiating position 5. Further, after the wire electrode 1 is repaired, the electrode 7 is allowed to pass through a machined groove 7 along an already set machining locus 6. Further, when the electrode 1 reaches the wire breakage position 4, a control device 11a delivers a control signal to a machining power source 8 which is energized to restart the machining. On the way of the movement of the electrode along the locus 6, if there is a part in which the width of the machined groove is smaller than that of the electrode 1 due to deformation, the electrode 1 is broken. When a control device 16 detects the breakage of the wire electrode 1, it returns the electrode 1 to the machining reinitiating position 5 to repair the electrode 1, and then machining along a reverse locus 6' is continued in accordance with a program in a user's memory.
