PURPOSE:To obtain a (co)polymer having high bulk specific gravity, uniform particle size, low content of fine powder and narrow molecular weight distribution, by preliminarily polymerizing an olefin in the presence of a specific solid catalyst to give a preliminary polymerization catalyst and polymerizing the olefin by using the preliminary polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is preliminarily polymerized in the presence of a solid catalyst consisting of at least (A) a catalytic component of transition metal compound of group IVB of the periodic table [e.g. bis(cyclopentadienyl) zirconium monochloride monohydride, etc.] and (B an aluminooxan catalytic component [e.g. compound shown by formula II or III (R is hydrocarbon; m>=2), etc.] to give an olefin preliminary polymerization catalyst and the olefin is polymerized in the presence of the prepared olefin preliminary polymerization catalyst. The solid derivative preferably has a ratio (M/Al) of the transition metal atom (M) to the Al atom of 0.2-0.001, 5-200mum average particle diameter and 20-1,000m<2>/g specific surface area.
