PURPOSE:To ensure a low trouble rate and a clear printed condition, by using a bidirectional printing mechanism for feeding an ink ribbon leftward and rightward by being supplied with a rotating force, preliminarily setting the number of times of the ink ribbon to be used, and reciprocating the ink ribbon until the set number of times is reached. CONSTITUTION:A gear 9 is fitted to the lower end of each of rotary shafts 8 for take-up bobbins 2a, 2b, and a one-way spring clutch 10 for acting in a fastening direction at the time of taking up an ink ribbon is fitted to each of the rotary shafts 8. A rack gear 4 is provided with a continuous tooth parts 4a at an end thereof, and the lower end of the gear 4 is supported by a spring 11. The rack gear 4 is disengaged from the take-up gear 9 at non-printing time by operating a cam 16. The number of times to reciprocate the ink ribbon is preliminarily set on a counter; when the number of times of reciprocation (use) is counted up, a CPU functions to turn up a thermal head 5 and stops take-up of the ribbon, thereby forcibly preventing excessive use of the ink ribbon 3, and preventing unclear printing.
