PURPOSE:To improve the shelf stability of an image in dark and light places at high temp. and humidity by incorporating a specified amt. of reducing sugar to a neutralizing system. CONSTITUTION:Reducing sugar such as D-glucose is incorporated into a neutralizing system for lowering the pH of an alkali processing soln. for the titled photographic element by 0.1-20mmol./m<2>. The reducing sugar may be incorporated into the neutralization timing layer or the neutralizing layer of the neutralizing system but it is preferably incorporated into the neutralizing layer. The neutralizing system may be set in the photosensitive element or the cover sheet confronting the photosensitive element. When the neutralizing system is used, the increase of the density of the highlighted part of an image after storage in a dark place at high temp. and humidity over a long period, and the discoloration of the image after storage in a light place at high temp. and humidity over a long period can be suppressed.
