PURPOSE:To produce high-quality coal suitable for producing high-quality needle- like coke, by adding condensed tar of coke oven gas to coal to be fed to a coke oven and charging the coal in such a way that the height of charged coal is lower than that of ordinary coal. CONSTITUTION:Coal to be fed to a coke oven is incorporated with >=0.1wt.% (preferably >=0.5wt.%) tar condensed at >=70 deg.C (preferably >=80 deg.C) in a process of stepwise cooling a gas produced in the coke oven recovered from a dry main and/or a suction main. Then the coal is fed to a carbonizing chamber of the coke oven in such a way that the height of charged coal is lower than that of ordinary coal to give the aimed tar.
