NEW MATERIAL:The fluoroalkane derivative of formula (R1 is 4-16C alkyl or alkoxy; R2 is 1-16C alkyl; C* is asymmetric carbon atom; one of Z1 and Z2 is 1,4-phenylene and the other is pyrazine-2,5-diyl). EXAMPLE:5-(4-Decyloxyphenyl)-2-(2-fluorodecyloxy)pyrazine. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. It gives a liquid crystal composition having increased spontaneous polarization. A liquid crystal element produced therefrom has excellent electric field response. It can be used as a ferroelectric liquid crystal. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced e.g. according to the reaction formula by reacting a compound such as p-hydroxyacetophenone with a compound such as decyl bromide and reacting the reaction product successively with SeO2, H2NCH2CONH2, HCl etc.
