PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of machining faces and prolong the life of finish tools by providing a lathe with two or more respective cutting tools for rough and finish cutting and by machining a workpiece using a cutting tool suitable for finish under the conditions appropriate for finish after cutting using a cutting tool for rough cutting and under the conditions appropriate for rough cutting without removing the workpiece. CONSTITUTION:A disk shaped base 1 is rotated in the direction of an arrow 100 and a cutting tool 2 for rough cutting and a cutting tool 3 for finish are arranged on the upper side of a tool rest 15 and the radial line passing the rotation axis of the base 1 respectively. Firstly,the cutting tool is fed upto a depth of cut of 90mum, for example from the bore side of the base 1 to the outside, and the cutting tool 2 starts cutting at the point of 50mum. When the tool rest 15 completes movement by 10mm in a feed direction, the cutting using the tool 3 starts upto a depth of cutting of 3mum, for example. this allows the cutting tool cutting a highly accurate surface to prolong its life without decreasing machining efficiency even if the depth of cutting in finish cutting is reduced.
