PURPOSE:To correctly detect a tape even if the width of a tape or marking width varies by deciding that the tape is detected when a tape detection signal enters a specific detection width range. CONSTITUTION:When a tape 3A has normal width, a tape detection signal B is within the specific detection width range between a maximum value smaller than the normal width of the tape 3A and a maximum value larger than the normal width, and consequently it is decided that the tape 3A is detected. Further, a tape detection signal BB corresponding to a tape 3B which varies in tape width from the normal width owing to elongation is larger than the minimum value of the detection width, so it is decided that the tape 3B is detected. Further, a tape detection signal B corresponding to a tape 3C which varies in tape width owing to a shift is smaller than the maximum value of the detection width, so it is decided that the tape 3C is detected.
