A description is given of a method of piece and/or portion identification and localisation for the textiles industry, in which designated pieces and/or portions run through a mulitiplicity of processing stages which are carried out in a series of machines. In this case, a data acquisition device is in each case arranged at the machines or at a selected number of machines and these devices are connected to a central data processing device. On the pieces and/or portions to be processed, at least one data carrier which can be read automatically by the data acquisition device is fastened in such a way that, when the pieces or portions are processed on the machines, the data acquisition device reads the data carrier and transfers the read data to the central data processing device. A further data carrier for carrying out the method has at least one layer onto which a marking can be applied permanently by magnetisation and/or printing. A data acquisition device for automatically reading the data carriers is designed as an edge holding-out device and is provided with a measuring head which extends over virtually the entire edge guiding zone. The measuring head is assigned an evaluation circuit which converts the magnetic pulses or optical markings acquired into electric signals or radio signals, which are fed to the central data processing device.
