In a document shredder, the disintegrating rollers (1a) are provided, at the periphery of their ring discs (3a), with pressing teeth (7a) and pressing tooth gaps (8a), which respectively interact with the associated gap base (6a), which is formed by the roller core (5a), of the other disintegrating roller (1) at different peripheral speeds in such a manner that the material to be disintegrated is first of all broken down into individual particles by cutting, crushing or tearing and then immediately pressed into granular form, it being at the same time ground up in such a manner that character impressions which can possibly still be deciphered are made completely unrecognisable. By means of this method according to the invention, the most diverse materials, in particular documents, and the most diverse substances can be effectively disintegrated and then disposed of in a compacted state, with a relatively low energy requirement. <IMAGE>
