In the case of an ignition device having an ignition transformer and at least one permanent magnet which is periodically moved past the limbs of the transformer core and has two pole shoe stacks, the pole shoe stack which trails in the operating rotation direction is constructed, in order to increase the resistance to rotating backwards, to have a length such that the pole shoe stack magnetically short-circuits the transformer core limbs as it moves past them.
