PURPOSE:To produce the title resin excellent in hue, heat stability and low temperature resistance, by hydrogenating a hydrocarbon resin obtained by ther mally copolymerizing a cyclopentadiene monomer with 2-methyl-2-butene. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen resin is obtained by thermally copolymerizing 40-90wt.% cyclopentadiene monomer (e.g., methylcyclopentadiene) with 60-10wt.% 2-methyl-2-butene in the absence of any radical initiator at 240-300 deg.C. This hydrocarbon resin is hydrogenated at 150-300 deg.C in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as an Ni, Pb or Co based catalyst and in the presence (or absence) of a diluent to obtain a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin of a bromine number <=10, a Gardner color index <=1, a softening point of 60-150 deg.C and a content of polymers of an MW (in terms of PS) >=5,000 <=2wt.%.
