PURPOSE:To make rolling workability good by forming alpha-Al2O3 whisker on a plate Al layer provided on the surface of stainless steel contg. Ti and thereafter applying (R)-Al2O3 thereon to form an alumina carrier. CONSTITUTION:Ti-contg. stainless steel consisting of 3-25wt.% Cr, <=0.08wt.% C, <1wt.% Al, <=0.8wt.% Mn, <=0.8wt.% Si, 0.05-0.5wt.% Ti and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is manufactured. Al plating is performed on the surface of this stainless steel by means of vapor deposition plating or electroplating and '-Al2O3 whisker is formed on the plated Al layer simultaneously with vapor deposition plating or by heat-treatment after plating and thereafter a base material for a catalytic converter is formed by applying (R)-Al2O3 thereon.
