PURPOSE:To obtain a CO and H2-rich, medium-calory gas having a decreased amt. of impurities in high efficiency from a solid carbonaceous material, by blowing a solid carbonaceous material together with a gasifying agent into a molten metal bath under operation conditions satisfying particular operation parameter relationships. CONSTITUTION:Gasification of a carbonaceous material is conducted by blowing a solid carbonaceous material (A) (e.g., coal) together with a gasifying agent (B) (e.g., O2), through an unimmersed lance 2 provided so as to be freely elevated or descended by means of a lance filter 9, into a molten metal bath 3 in a gasifier oven 1 having an oven cooling pipe 5 mounted on the oven wall thereof under the operation conditions simulaneously satisfying the operation parameter relationships of formula I-IV [wherein P is the momentum of component (A)-contg. component (B) jet ejected from the lance 2; rhoL is the density of the metal bath 3; g is the gravitational acceleration; Ho is the height of the lance 2 (distance from the tip of the lance 2 to the surface of the metal bath 3 in a static state); Hc is the depth of a dimple formed by component (A)-contg. component (B) jet; HL is the depth of the metal bath 3 in a static state just beneath the lance 2; and epsilon is the density of the agitation power of the metal bath 3 by component (A)-contg. component (B) jet.
