The transmission system maintains synchronisation between the ends of the system by sending a pilot tone with the data. The pilot tone transmitted is in analog form and is small compared with the amplitude of the data signal. Sampling of the data singal at the receiving end is under control of a local clock, adjustment of which is effected concurrently with that of the data signals in which to effect the adjustment the local clock is compared with the received and detected pilot tone, and the timing of the local clock is adjusted in accordance with the results of the comparison to maintain synchronisation.
