PURPOSE:To obtain the title polyamide which can give a stretched film of excellent tensile strength, by reacting tolylene 2,4- and/or tolylene 2,6- diisocyanates with terephthalic acid of a specified acetic acid content. CONSTITUTION:Terephthalic acid is recrystallized from water and/or acetic acid at high temperature and high pressure to obtain terephthalic acid (B) of an acetic acid content <=1,000ppm. Tolylene 2,4- and/or tolylene 2,6-diisocyanates (A) are reacted with 0.70-1.30mol, per mol of component A, of component B at 100 deg.C or above for 1-20hr in the presence of an alkali metal compound (C) (e.g., KF) in a solvent (D) (e.g., N,N'-dimethylethyleneurea).
