PURPOSE:To enable provision of finish surface coarseness with high efficiency, by a method wherein a polishing work is applied on a workpiece in a state to bring the workpiece into close contact with the surface of a rotating polishing stone as a processing pressure is orderly increased until the processing pressure is increased to a given value, and thereafter the processing pressure is decreased to perform a polishing work. CONSTITUTION:Through lowering of a rotation shaft 36 with the aid of a motor 35, the processing pressure of a workpiece W is orderly boosted from a lower pressure. When a processing pressure is increased to a given high value, lowering of the rotation shaft 36 is stopped, and a polishing work at a given processing pressure is performed for a given time. Thereafter, the motor 35 is reversed, the rotation shaft 36 is raised, and this raising of the shaft causes reduction of the processing pressure of the workpiece W on a polishing stone 5 is reduced. When a processing pressure is reduced to a given value, the motor 35 is stopped, and a polishing work is continued at the processing pressure for a given time. The polishing work is performed as a pressure is reduced to complete a given polishing work. This polishing work improves fining of finish surface coarseness and size precision. Further, since a processing pressure is arbitrarily controllable during polishing, a surface to be machined can be high-efficiently polished according to the material and application of the workpiece.
